UTSA completes sweep of Southeastern Louisiana with 7-3 win Sunday

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO - Sophomore Krystal Guevara's pinch-hit grand slam keyed a seven-run fourth inning that helped propel UTSA past Southeastern Louisiana, 7-3, Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner Field.

With the win, UTSA completed a three-game sweep of the Lady Lions and improved to 20-14 overall and 10-5 in the Southland Conference.

The Roadrunners and Lady Lions battled through three scoreless innings, a stark contrast of Saturday's 9-0 and 15-5 run-rulings by UTSA.

Southeastern Louisiana starting pitcher Rachel Ray held the Roadrunners hitless through the first three frames but walked sophomore Jessica Rogers to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore Jessica Els broke up the no-hit bid with a single up the middle to put Roadrunners at first and second with no outs.

Senior Christy Brownlee chased Ray with a single to left field to load the bases. Freshman Aimee Murray greeted reliever Natalie Dunagan with a single up the middle that plated Rogers to put UTSA up 1-0. Junior Krystal Gibson continued the rally with another single up the middle, scoring Els and Brownlee.

A strikeout, a walk to junior Jennifer Davis and another pitching change for the Lady Lions loaded the bases with one out for Guevara's heroics. Guevara launched her second home run of the season and the ninth for the Roadrunners in the series just over the outstretched glove of Southeastern Louisiana's left fielder, Katie Szmergalski to put UTSA up 7-0.

Guevara's grand slam would prove to be the difference as the Lady Lions responded with three runs on four hits in the top of the fifth inning to close the gap to 7-3.

UTSA would hold on behind solid pitching from freshman Stevi Simpson, who worked all seven innings, scattering nine hits and three runs, one earned, to improve to 7-5 on the season.

In the three-game series, UTSA pounded out 31 runs on 28 hits, nine of those long balls. Individually, Els went 6-for-9 with one double, a grand slam and seven RBI. Brownlee batted .571 (4-for-7) with three homers and eight RBI, while Rogers and Gibson both went 4-for-8 with Gibson stroking two home runs and driving in five. Sophomore Amanda Horton and Davis both collected three hits apiece for the weekend.

The Roadrunners stay home to host Texas Southern in a doubleheader on Thursday at 1 p.m., before facing Stephen F. Austin in a three-game conference series on Saturday-Sunday, April 3-5.
