Hurd named AP Honorable Mention All-American and to the NABC College All-Star Team

SAN ANTONIO - For UTSA men's basketball senior forward LeRoy Hurd, the awards continue to roll in, while on Tuesday he learned that he will have the chance to further extend his college career.

Hurd was named an honorable mention All-American by the Associated Press, while also receiving a formal invitation from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) to participate in 2004 NABC College All-Star Game on April 2 at the SBC Center against the Harlem Globetrotters. The game will tip off at 7 p.m.

"I am honored to be a participant in the All-Star Game," Hurd said. "To be able to play one more game at the college level will be great. I am going to enjoy playing with and against all of these great players and will work hard to prove that I belong on the same court with them all."

A native of Moss Point, Miss., Hurd was the second Roadrunners player in the past three years to receive the honorable mention All-American honors, joining McEverett Powers, who received the award in 2002.

"I don't know if any Southland Conference teams have ever had two players named All-American," UTSA coach Tim Carter told the San Antonio Express-News. "They always like to have some local flavor in that game, and the fact that he had such a good year, I'm sure that sealed the deal for him."

Hurd, who helped lead UTSA to its third NCAA Tournament appearance against Stanford last week, was recently named the Southland Conference's (SLC) Player of the Year and the 2004 SLC Tournament Most Valuable Player. For the second straight year he led the SLC in scoring, pouring in 19.4 points per game, while pulling down 8.1 rebounds per outing. He closed his UTSA career with a team-high 18 points against Stanford on March 18, giving him 1,027 points for his two-year UTSA career.
