HAMMOND, La. - Junior Chris Lewis went 2-for-3 with three RBI, including a two-run homer to ice the game in the top of the ninth inning, and freshman pitcher Steven Vasquez scattered one run and four hits over seven innings to help UTSA beat Southeastern Louisiana, 5-1, Saturday at Alumni Field.
With the win Vasquez improves to a staff-best 4-1 as the Runners capture their first league win.
UTSA took advantage of four Lions' miscues on the day, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Sam Mitchell led off the game with a single and was moved around by a sac bunt from J.R. Voyles. Mitchell then advanced to third on an error by the Southeastern second baseman. The Roadrunners capitalized when Ryan Crew put the ball in play to score Mitchell followed an error by the Lions' third baseman allowing Voyles to reach third. Lewis picked up his first of three RBI's on the afternoon, driving in Voyles with a single to left.
The Lions' only run came in the fourth frame on a two-out Ryan Spencer solo home run to cut the Runners' lead in half, 2-1. Vasquez stayed strong for UTSA through the seventh inning, retiring eight of the next nine Southeastern batters he faced.
UTSA added an insurance run in the eight with Dustin Perez getting on by way of a walk and advancing with a stolen base and a single by Clint Sansom. A fielder's choice off the bat of Mitchell allowed Perez to cross the plate. The Runners received the cushion they needed in the final frame when Lewis connected for his team-leading fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot.
The rubber game of the series is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
