UTSA opens Southland Conference play at Southeastern Louisiana this weekend

SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA baseball team will open the 2004 Southland Conference slate this weekend when it travels to Hammond, La., to take on Southeastern Louisiana. Game one of the three-game series is set for 6:30 p.m. Friday, followed by singles games on Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.

UTSA opens Southland Conference play with a 9-8 record after dropping a 5-0 decision to top-ranked Texas on Tuesday. To this point the Runners have won all three non-conference series they have played taking two out of three from New Mexico State in Las Cruces and from Army and George Washington both at home. The Runners are 4-8 all-time in conference openers and 0-3 under head coach Sherman Corbett.

The Series: 
UTSA vs. Southeastern Louisiana
The two teams have met 18 times with the all-time count standing at an even 9-9. UTSA won two out of three last season with the last meeting, a 7-6 decision, going to the Lions on April 6, 2003. Coach Corbett is 6-3 against Southeastern La.

SAN ANTONIO - The top-ranked Texas Longhorns shut out the UTSA Roadrunners, 5-0, here Tuesday night in front of a season-best crowd of 4,369.

Five Texas pitchers combined to toss the four-hitter as the Longhorns improved to 24-2 on the year with the win. UTSA fell to 9-8, despite holding Texas to only seven hits. 

At the Helm

Fourth year head coach Sherman Corbett is the third UTSA skipper in baseball history. With an overall record of 84-85 (.429) entering the 2004 season, Corbett has posted more wins in his first three seasons than either coach before him.

On Deck

UTSA hosts non-conference action on Tuesday and Wednesday against Texas-Pan American in their Roadrunner Field home opener. The teams will take the diamond at 2 p.m. on both days at Roadrunner Field located on the UTSA campus.

On the Road Again

UTSA opens the 2004 Southland Conference season on the road for the fourth consecutive season, all under Coach Corbett. The Runners are 0-3 in SLC openers and 3-6 in SLC opening series under Corbett.

Four Runners on Alamo City Irish Classic All-Tournament Team
After runner-up finish in the Alamo City Irish Baseball Classic, four UTSA Roadrunners including J.R. Voyles (Tomball/Klein Oak), Sam Mitchell (Pearland/Univ. of Houston), Lucas Stewart (Santa Fe/Alvin JC) and Klae Boehme (Lytle/HS) were each named to the all-tournament team following Tuesday’s championship game.

Saving Stewart

Senior utility man Lucas Stewart became UTSA’s all-time saves leader notching the ninth of his career in his first mound appearance of 2004 on Sunday, Mar. 7 in a 17-9 win against then No. 7 Notre Dame. He added his second save of the season in his second appearance to give him 10 for his career when he struck out the side in UTSA’s 3-1 10-inning win over Texas-Pan American on Saturday.

Top-10 Win

UTSA’s 17-9 win over then No. 7 Notre Dames on Mar. 7 was the Runners’ first win against a top-10 team in program history. 

A Look Back - 1994

It was 10 years ago this season that the UTSA baseball team, a then third-year program, captured the 1994 Southland Conference Tournament Championship and advanced to its first and only NCAA Tournament appearance. 

So Fresh and So Clean
After a packed roster of 12 seniors a year ago, the 2004 roster is filled with 22 freshmen and sophomores combined.

Crew Tabbed Preseason All-SLC
PLANO, Texas - University of Texas at San Antonio sophomore Ryan Crew has been named to the 2004 all-Southland Conference (SLC) preseason second team it was announced Wed., Jan. 21 by the league office.

Crew, the 2003 SLC Freshman of the Year and a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, is the lone UTSA representative. The Roadrunners' shortstop started 52 games as true freshman a year ago. He led the team in four statistical categories his rookie season including batting average (.313), hits (68), doubles (14) and total bases (101). The Sugarland (Texas) native tied for the second-most homers on the team with five and had a team-best 17 multi-hit games.

In the SLC preseason polls, also released Wednesday, UTSA was picked eighth and seventh, respectively, by the league's coaches and sports information directors.
