UTSA splits doubleheader at Sam Houston State Game 1 - UTSA 7, Sam Houston 2 Game 2 - Sam Houston 5, UTSA 4
HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Sophomore Jessica Rogers went 3-for-4, sophomore Amanda Horton launched a three-run homer and freshman Ursula Mares allowed just one hit over seven innings to help lead UTSA past Sam Houston State, 7-2, in game one of a doubleheader Saturday at Bearkat Softball Field. The Bearkats won a thrilling game two in the bottom of the eighth inning, 5-4.
UTSA now stands at 14-11 overall and 6-2 in Southland Conference action, while Sam Houston State is 14-12 and 6-2.
In game one, UTSA struck for a single run in each of the first three innings. Rogers launched a solo homer to left-center field in the top of the first inning, her eighth of the year.
In the second, sophomore Jessica Els reached second on an error, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out single to left field by senior Tammy Nelson to give UTSA a 2-0 lead.
The Roadrunners added another run in the third to extend their lead to 3-0. Junior Jennifer Davis walked and stole second to set up an RBI-single to center by Rogers.
After a scoreless fourth, UTSA broke the game open in the fifth with four runs on three hits. Rogers led off the inning with her third hit of the game, a single up the middle. Senior Christy Brownlee walked and freshman Aimee Murray singled to score freshman Ashley Long, who was pinch-running for Rogers. Horton followed with a long home run over the left-center field fence to put the Roadrunners up 7-0. It was her second long ball of the season.
Sam Houston fought back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on two singles and three walks off freshman Stevi Simpson, who came on in relief of Mares. Mares re-entered and induced three straight pop-ups on the infield to end the Bearkat threat.
Mares worked seven scoreless innings in all, allowing just one hit and striking out four in running her record to 10-6 on the season and 5-1 in the SLC. Melissa Collins (5-6) got the loss.
In game two, Sam Houston got on the board first with a two-run homer to left by Shelly Sleep in the bottom of the first.
UTSA struck back in the third on the second home run of the day by Horton, this one a solo shot to center field.
The Bearkats added another run in the third as April Bardwell doubled to left and scored on a single by Sara Gatlin. Brownlee cut the lead back to one on her 11th homer of the year, a solo shot to center.
UTSA rallied for the tying run with two outs in the top of the seventh. Rogers was hit by the pitch and pinch run for by sophomore Stacey Gillespie. Gillespie advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brownlee and to third on a groundout by Els before coming home on a single up the middle by Murray.
The Roadrunner took their first lead of the game in the top of the eighth. Sophomore Jenny Garcia reached on a bunt single and stole second to start the inning. Junior Krystal Gibson followed with a single to right putting Roadrunners at first and third with no outs. Two batters later, Rogers came through again with a big RBI, this one on a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Garcia to put UTSA up 4-3.
The Bearkats came back with one out in the bottom of the eighth to win the game on a walk-off, two-run homer by Chrissy Dileo.
The two teams will play a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
