UTSA baseball set for three-game series at Texas-Pan American Complete Release
SAN ANTONIO - Coming off a runner-up finish at the Alamo City/Irish Classic, the UTSA baseball team is set for a three-game series at Texas-Pan American this weekend. First pitch on Friday and Saturday is 7 p.m., followed by a 1 p.m. start in Sunday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The Roadrunners face UTPA for the first three of seven meetings this season.
The Series: UTSA vs. UTPA The Roadrunners lead the all-time series with the Broncs by the count of 31-22. UTSA has won four of the last five meetings after going 3-1 against UTPA last season. The last meeting was a 7-6 extra-inning win for the Runners in Edinburg on April 30, 2003. Coach Corbett owns a 13-2 record against the Broncs.
Last Time Out: 3/6-3/9 Alamo City Invitational After taking second place in the Alamo City Irish Baseball Classic, four UTSA Roadrunners including J.R. Voyles (Tomball/Klein Oak), Sam Mitchell (Pearland/Univ. of Houston), Lucas Stewart (Santa Fe/Alvin JC) and Klae Boehme (Lytle/HS) were each named to the all-tournament team following Tuesday’s championship game.
UTSA (8-6) went 2-2 with wins over No. 8 Notre Dame and Southern Illinois while falling in their opening game to Penn State and in the championship rematch against the Irish.
At the Helm Fourth year head coach Sherman Corbett is the third UTSA skipper in baseball history. With an overall record of 84-85 (.429) entering the 2004 season, Corbett has posted more wins in his first three seasons than either coach before him.
On Deck UTSA returns home for a single game against Texas on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Wolff Stadium, before opening Southland Conference play with a weekend series at Southeastern Louisiana Mar. 19-21.
Saving Stewart Senior utility man Lucas Stewart became UTSA’s all-time saves leader notching the ninth of his career in his first mound appearance of 2004 on Sunday, Mar. 7 in a 17-9 win against then No. 7 Notre Dame.
Top-10 Win UTSA’s 17-9 win over then No. 7 Notre Dames on Mar. 7 was the Runners’ first win against a top-10 team in program history.
A Look Back - 1994 It was 10 years ago this season that the UTSA baseball team, a then third-year program, captured the 1994 Southland Conference Tournament Championship and advanced to its first and only NCAA Tournament appearance.
So Fresh and So Clean After a packed roster of 12 seniors a year ago, the 2004 roster is filled with 22 freshmen and sophomores combined.
Crew Tabbed Preseason All-SLC PLANO, Texas - University of Texas at San Antonio sophomore Ryan Crew has been named to the 2004 all-Southland Conference (SLC) preseason second team it was announced Wed., Jan. 21 by the league office.
Crew, the 2003 SLC Freshman of the Year and a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American, is the lone UTSA representative. The Roadrunners' shortstop started 52 games as true freshman a year ago. He led the team in four statistical categories his rookie season including batting average (.313), hits (68), doubles (14) and total bases (101). The Sugarland (Texas) native tied for the second-most homers on the team with five and had a team-best 17 multi-hit games.
In the SLC preseason polls, also released Wednesday, UTSA was picked eighth and seventh, respectively, by the league's coaches and sports information directors.
