No. 8 Notre Dame wins Alamo City/Irish Classic title with 13-5 victory over UTSA Tuesday

SAN ANTONIO – Sophomore Ryan Crew and freshman Michael McKennon both collected three hits, but No. 8 Notre Dame pounded out 13 runs on 12 hits to take a 13-5 victory over UTSA in the championship game of the Alamo City/Irish Baseball Classic at Wolff Stadium Tuesday.

With the win, the Irish improve to 9-1 on the year, while the Roadrunners fall to 8-6.

The Irish jumped on the board first with three runs in the top of the second and five runs in the third to take an early 8-0 lead.

UTSA got on the board in the bottom half of the third as Eric Moreno singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sam Mitchell. The Roadrunners cut the lead to 8-2 in the fourth as Michael McKennon doubled and scored on an error by Notre Dame.

The Irish got one run back in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Danny Dressman that plated Steve Sollman. Notre Dame pushed three more across in the sixth to up the lead to 12-2.

UTSA got two back in the bottom of the sixth on a two-RBI single up the middle that scored Lucas Stewart and Zach Etheredge, who both reached on singles, to make the score 12-4.

The Irish tacked on one run in the seventh, while the Roadrunners made it 13-5 after eight as Zach Etheredge reached on an error and scored on a groundout by Moreno.

Jess Stewart pitched five and 2/3 innings, scattering eight hits and allowing four runs, three earned, in improving his record to 2-0 on the season. Jason Vecchio (0-2) took the loss.

Three Roadrunners made the all-tournament team – Klae Boehme, Sam Mitchell and Lucas Stewart.

UTSA will travel to Edinburg, Texas, for a three-game series against Texas-Pan American on Friday-Sunday, March 12-14. First pitch Friday is set for 7 p.m.
