UTSA blanks Southern Illinois 5-0 to advance to championship

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO - UTSA senior Klae Boehme went the distance for his second complete game and his first shutout of the season as the Roadrunners defeated Southern Illinois 5-0 on the third day of the Alamo City Invitational at Wolff Stadium Monday afternoon.

The win sets up a rematch between the Roadrunners and the Irish of Notre Dame, who are both 2-1 in tournament play, in the championship game on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Wolff Stadium. UTSA will be the home team in the game due to having the greater run differential between the two teams.

The Roadrunners jumped ahead of the Salukis in the second taking advantage of a throwing error by the third baseman. Following what would have been the third out of the frame, Eric Moreno knocked in two on a two-out double to right field bringing in Robbie Johns and Michael McKennon.

UTSA was able to thwart two SIU rallies on a pair of inning-ending double plays started by Roadrunner shortstop Ryan Crew in both the fifth and eighth innings.

The Roadrunners added one when Lucas Stewart hammered a ball off the center field wall to start the sixth with a triple and later scored on a contact play where he jarred the ball out of the SIU catcher's glove on a fielder's choice off the bat of Brandon Saunders. Crew also sparked the offense with a two-run homer, his third of the season, to put the game out of reach in the seventh.

Boehme went nine innings scattering eight hits and three walks while fanning six to move to 3-1 on the season. It was Marshall Tucker (0-4) taking the loss for the Salukis on seven innings of work with eight hits, three earned runs, no walks and four strikeouts.

The Alamo City Invitational concludes tomorrow with Penn State and Southern Illinois playing in the consolation game at noon and UTSA taking on No. 8 Notre Dame in the finale at 4 p.m. at Wolff Stadium.
