UTSA women open defense of SLC crown with 7-0 blanking of Sam Houston State

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — The UTSA women’s tennis team blanked 7-0 in the Southland Conference opener for the Roadrunners on Sunday to improve to 2-4 on the season and 1-0 in the league.

UTSA won all three doubles matches to take the doubles point. Junior Paula Erausquin and sophomore Barbara Mooney combined to defeat Cristina Flores and Mounia Hassib of Sam Houston at No. 1 doubles, 8-6. Junior Massiel Martinez and sophomore Nadezda Rossikhina beat Emma McDougall and Erika Rudich at No. 2, 9-7, and freshmen Tasja Fuhrig and Ana Paula Soto downed Amanda Jung and Bethany Yurkiw at No. 3, 8-1.

In singles action, Erausquin dropped Hassib at No. 1, 6-3, 6-1, Rossikhina beat McDougall at No. 2, 6-2, 6-1, and Martinez bettered Flores at No. 3, 6-2, 6-3. Fuhrig won at No. 4, 6-3, 6-0, Mooney at No. 5, 6-2, 6-1, and senior Kateryna Romanenko at No. 6, 6-0, 6-0.

The Roadrunners return to San Antonio to host I-35 rival Texas State on Tuesday, March 9. First serve in the doubles matches is set for 4 p.m. at the UTSA Tennis Center.
