UTSA pulls off 17-9 win over No. 7 Notre Dame Box Score
SAN ANTONIO - With UTSA leading 11-9 after eight innings, and Notre Dame chipping away at the lead, the Roadrunners solidified their upset bid with a six-run ninth on their way to a convincing 17-9 win over the Irish, the No. 7 team in the country entering the weekend, on the second day of the Alamo City/Irish Classic Sunday afternoon at Wolff Stadium.
The Roadrunners first took the lead, 3-1, in the top of the third with J. R. Voyles reaching home on the front end of a double steal and Chris Lewis crossing the plate on a Notre Dame error, one of six Irish miscues on the day, that extended the inning. Voyles had a career-day in the win going 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs including a two-run home run, his first of the season.
After the Irish answered with a run on a Matt Edwards sac fly that scored Steve Sollman, UTSA extended the lead the next inning with three runs. The Runners tacked on two more in the fourth on Robbie Johns' two-run homer to push the lead to 8-2. The Irish were not done, however, with Edwards, who finished with four RBIs, sending a three-run blast over the right field wall to cut it to 8-5.
UTSA, who scored in all but two innings, posted two more in each of the next two frames along with one more in the seventh. Notre Dame rallied with two outs in consecutive innings to stay alive with the score standing at 11-9 heading to the ninth.
UTSA's ninth-inning explosion occurred after a pickoff call for the third out of the eighth inning was reversed in which the ND runner was called safe and the Irish stayed at bat. Lucas Stewart, who picked up his first save of the season, returned to the mound after the controversy to throw one pitch, which Steve Andres popped up to end the inning again.
Steven Vasquez pitched five innings allowing five runs on five hits and a walk while striking out four to earn his second win, while Tom Thornton took the loss for the Irish.
The Roadrunners (7-5) will be back in action as the Classic continues on Monday at 5:30 p.m. against Southern Illinois at Wolff Stadium.
