UTSA women to open outdoor season at Trinity Invitational Saturday

SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA women's track and field team will open the 2004 outdoor campaign on Saturday, March 6, when they compete in the Trinity Invitational at E.M. Stevens Stadium on the Trinity University campus.

While a few members of the team are still competing indoors like sophomore Ryanne Dupree (San Antonio, Texas), who is entered in the heptathlon at the McDonald's Last Chance Qualifier in Moscow, Idaho, on Friday-Saturday, the majority of the squad will make the short trip across town for the first outdoor meet of the season. Several other in-state schools also will be in attendance, including the host school Trinity, Angelo State, Howard Payne, Texas College, Texas Lutheran and St. Mary's.

The Roadrunners finished third at the SLC Indoor Championships in Houston, Texas, on Feb. 20-21. Dupree, who scored 18 points for the meet, won the heptathlon with a personal-best and NCAA provisional-qualifying 3,800 points, while the distance medley relay team of sophomore Meghan Chance (San Antonio, Texas), freshman Diane Smith (San Antonio, Texas), and seniors Letitia Gilkes (St. Michael, Barbados) and Leticia Cerna (San Antonio, Texas) took top honors with a 11:49.59 clocking. Cerna also won the mile with a personal-best 4:52.02, while Gilkes outran the field in the 800m in 2:12.39.
