UTSA takes third at Roadrunner Intercollegiate

SAN ANTONIO - Freshman Kitt Thabungkan tied for 11th place to help lead the UTSA men's golf team to a third-place finish at the Roadrunner Intercollegiate Tuesday at Oak Hills Country Club (6,691 yards, par 71).

The Roadrunners entered the day in third place at 584, 10 strokes back of second-round leader Kansas (574). UTSA turned in a final round 291 to finish at 23-over-par 875. Kansas held on for the win with a 282 to finish at four-over 856, while Big 12 rival Baylor was second at 18-over 870 (291-294-285). Wichita State (877) and Rice (886) rounded out the top five.

Baylor's Ryan Baca came back from two shots down to win the individual medalist crown, firing a 67 Tuesday to finish at four-under 209 (72-70-67). Mark Warman of San Diego State was second at two-under 211 (67-73-71).

For the Roadrunners, Thabungkan (Bangkok, Thailand) shot rounds of 71, 72 and 75 to finish in a four-way tie for 11th place at five-over 218. Senior Mike Mezei (Lethbridge, Alberta) was not far behind in a two-way tie for 15th at six-over 219 (70-78-71). Sophomore John Elizondo (San Antonio, Texas) was UTSA's third-highest finisher, tying for 19th at eight-over 221 (74-72-75).

Freshman Matt Johnston (Winnipeg, Manitoba) tied for 37th (84-72-70=226) and sophomore Ryan Cromwell tied for 60th (76-77-78=231). Playing as individuals, freshman Tim Martin (Mandeville, La.) tied for 22nd (76-68-78=222) and senior Luke Healy (Del Rio, Texas) tied for 40th (76-73-78=227).

The Roadrunners return to the links next Monday-Tuesday, March 8-9, when they travel to Lafayette, La., to compete in the Louisiana Classic at Oakbourne Country Club.
