UTSA golfers open spring season at Rice Intercollegiate

SAN ANTONIO - Coming off one of the best fall seasons in school history, the UTSA men's golf team is set to kick off the spring campaign on Monday-Tuesday, Feb. 9-10, at the Rice Intercollegiate at BlackHorse Golf Club in Cypress, Texas.

The Roadrunners will face a stacked field of some of the top teams in the region, including Rice, Michigan, Notre Dame, Mississippi State, San Diego, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Virginia, Louisiana-Lafayette, Denver, Texas State, North Texas, UT-San Antonio, UT-Arlington, and UT-Pan American.

The format for the 54-hole tournament will be stroke play, with 36 holes on Monday followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday. Play begins at 7:30 am both days with a shotgun start. Tuesday's round will be seeded based on team scores from the first 36 holes.

UTSA fourth-year head coach Chris Donielson welcomes back five letterwinners, headlined by seniors Mike Mezei (Lethbridge, Alberta) and 2003 third-team all-Southland Conference selection Luke Healy (Del Rio, Texas) and sophomore John Elizondo (San Antonio, Texas).

As a team, the Roadrunners won the Air Force Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., and the SFA Crown Colony Classic in Lufkin, Texas. UTSA also posted runner-up finishes at the Nestle/Purina Classic in St.Charles, Mo., and at the Del Walker Collegiate in Long Beach, Calif.

Mezei and Elizondo enjoyed successful fall seasons that saw them finish the year ranked second (70.47) and third (71.80), respectively, in the conference in stroke average. Mezei won the individual title at the Falcon Invitational, while Elizondo took top honors at the Crown Colony Classic after winning a sudden-death playoff on the first hole.

Complete results will be posted on Rice's official athletics web site at www.riceowls.com.
