UTSA blanks Army, 4-0

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO - UTSA freshman Steven Vasquez pitched eight scoreless innings, scattering six hits with just one walk while striking out a career-high eight batters, to lead the Roadrunners to a 4-0 win over Army in game two of the weekend series Saturday afternoon at Wolff Stadium.

UTSA (4-2) took advantage of three Army errors, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth when a Black Knight miscue extended the frame. Chris Lewis led of the inning with a double and advanced to third on a groundout by Aric Green. After Eric Moreno was intentionally walked, Robbie Johns reached on a dropped pop-up by the first baseman, plating Lewis. Sam Mitchell added insult to injury delivering a two-out, two-run single to bring home Moreno and Johns.

The Roadrunners added to the 3-0 advantage after Lewis collected his second hit, a two-out single, in the home half of the sixth. Lewis then stole second and was brought around on a single off the bat of Green. On the day Lewis was 3-for-4 with two runs while Mitchell went 1-for-2 with two runs batted in.

Josh Ruffin provided an inning of relief for the Roadrunners closing out the win for Vasquez and the 'Runners.

Nate Stone and Jeremy Stache each collected two hits for the Black Knights, both going 2-for-4. Justin Kashner went seven innings allowing five hits and four runs, only one of which was earned, while walking one and striking out four to suffer the loss.

The teams wrap up the series Sunday at noon at Wolff Stadium.
