UTSA slides past Army in extra innings, 6-5 Box Score
SAN ANTONIO - Clint Sansom provided the game-winning single in his only at bat in the bottom of the eleventh inning as UTSA defeated Army, 7-6 Friday night at Wolff Stadium.
Lucas Stewart was hit to start off the 11th. He then stole second, putting him in scoring position with Sansom at the plate. After fouling off several pitches, Sansom came through with the game-winner through the left side to give the 'Runners the win in their home opener.
UTSA took a 2-1 lead in the second with RBI singles by Aric Green and J. R. Voyles. The Black Knights countered with a run in their half of the third courtesy of a Schuyler Williamson single. The Roadrunners regained the lead, 3-2, in the bottom half and extended the margin by a run in the fourth, as Green provided two more RBIs.
The lead held until the sixth frame when Army scored three runs on consecutive RBI singles by Nolan Cork and Jeremy Stache and a UTSA error.
The Roadrunners sent the game to extra innings when Chris Lewis, who was hit by a pitch, scored on an error by the Army second baseman in the bottom of the ninth.
Blake Brannon (1-1) pitched six innings of relief for UTSA to earn his first collegiate win. The freshman allowed just one run on four hits without issuing a walk and struck out three. Brad Johnson (0-1) took the loss for the Black Knights in the squad's season opener.
Sam Mitchell, Green and Eric Moreno all collected two hits for the 'Runners, while Green drove in three. Jason Meloy was 3-for-6 for Army and Stache finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Cork also drove in two for the Black Knights.
The teams will play again Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Wolff Stadium.
