HOUSTON - Sophomore Ryanne Dupree won the women's pentathlon and the women's distance medley relay team ran their way to the gold medal to highlight day one action for the UTSA track and field teams at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships on Friday at Bill Yeoman Field House.

Dupree (San Antonio, Texas) claimed top honors in the pentathlon with 3,800 points, comfortably ahead of runner-up Crystal Change of Stephen F. Austin's 3,664 tally. Dupree's pentathlon crown is the fourth consecutive league crown for a Roadrunner as Rhonda Ray won three straight from 2001-03.

The women's distance medley relay team of sophomore Meghan Chance (San Antonio, Texas), junior Chonna Wright (San Angelo, Texas) and seniors Letitia Gilkes (St. Michael, Barbados) and Leticia Cerna (San Antonio, Texas) raced to a winning time of 11:49.59. Texas-Arlington was well back in second in 12:05.53. It marked the second SLC title in the DMR for UTSA (2002).

In the men's heptathlon, senior Justin Youngblood (Goliad, Texas) leads all competitors with a day-one total of 3,222 points through four events. Sophomore Brandon Buteaux (San Antonio, Texas), the school record-holder (5,265) and reigning Southland Conference Men's Athlete of the Week, sits in third place with 2,951 points, while freshman Justin Smith (Sunrise Mountain, Ariz.) is in fifth (2,831). Youngblood won back-to-back conference titles in the event in 2001-02.

It was a busy day for Youngblood as he also posted a 23-3 Ľ measure in the long jump to finish fifth and cleared 6-7 ˝ to tie for sixth in the high jump.

In the team standings, the women stand fourth with 23 points behind Texas State (44), Stephen F. Austin (42) and Sam Houston State (27). The men are in ninth place with 6.5 points. Stephen F. Austin leads the men's race with 41 points.

In other action for the women, Dupree also notched a sixth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 18-7 3/4, giving her 13 points for the meet. She also posted the day's fastest qualifier in the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.58 clocking in the semifinals.
