UTSA track and field teams set for Southland Conference Indoor Championships

This Week:
The UTSA men's and women's track and field teams will travel to Houston, Texas, to compete in the Southland Conference Indoor Championships. The meet gets underway Friday, Feb. 20, at the University of Houston's Bill Yeoman Field House, and continues through Saturday. An opening ceremony is scheduled for Saturday at 1:30 p.m., and the awards ceremony will be held at approximately 5:15 p.m. following the final event.

2003 In Review:

Katie Poindexter won the 800-meter run and Rhonda Ray claimed top honors in the pentathlon to help lead the UTSA women to a third-place finish at the 2003 Southland Conference Indoor Championships in Houston. Poindexter clocked a 2:11.78 for gold, while Ray racked up 3,769 points in her five-event competition. The Roadrunners scored 88 points as a team to finish behind champion Southwest Texas (110) and Stephen F. Austin (105). The men placed fifth with 48.25 points behind gold-medal performances from Carl Johnson and Curtis Johnson. Carl won the 60m hurdles in 7.81 and was named Outstanding Track Performer of the meet, while Curtis crossed first in the 200m in 21.92. Southwest Texas also won the men's title with 137 points, followed by Northwestern State (116.25) and Sam Houston State (87.25).

Men's Indoor Recap:

The UTSA men have had several solid outings during this indoor season, highlighted by an NCAA provisional-qualifying and school record-setting performance by sophomore Brandon Buteaux in the heptathlon at last weekend's Boise State Multis. Buteaux scored a personal-best 5,265 points to finish fourth overall and third among collegians. He was named SLC Men's Athlete of the Week for his effort. In some other top performances this year, sophomore T.R. Sissel won the 400m in 50.27 at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational on Jan. 24, senior all-American Justin Youngblood won the "B" long jump with a 22-7 leap at the Houston Opener and freshman Larry Brooks posted a 1:56.43 to finish sixth in the 800m at the Houston Invitational on Feb. 7.

SLC Accolades:

Sophomore Brandon Buteaux was named Southland Conference Men's Athlete of the Week for his record-setting performance at the Boise State Multis on Feb. 13-14 in Nampa, Idaho. The San Antonio Churchill High product set a UTSA record with his NCAA provisional-qualifying total of 5,265 points in finishing fourth. Buteaux posted individual season bests in all seven events - 60 meters (7.31), 1,000 meters (2:52.03), 60-meter hurdles (7.9 hand-timed), high jump (6-7 1/2), long jump (21-10 3/4), pole vault (13-7 3/4) and shot put (37-10 1/2) - en route to his record-setting performance.

Women's Indoor Recap:
The UTSA women have made several solid showings during the indoor campaign, most recently by senior Letitia Gilkes at the historic Millrose Games in New York City. Gilkes, who claimed the SLC indoor 800m crown two years ago, won the College Women's 1,000 Yards in 2:34.81, while fellow senior Leticia Cerna was third in 2:37.74. In some other top performances, sophomore Ryanne Dupree won the 55m hurdles in 8.15 and the distance medley relay team of sophomore Meghan Chance, freshman Diane Smith, Gilkes and Cerna grabbed gold in 11:56.53 at the Texas Tech 6-Way.  

SLC Accolades:
Senior Letitia Gilkes was named Southland Conference Women's Athlete of the Week after her winning performance at the historic Millrose Games on Feb. 6. Gilkes, who hails from St. Michael, Barbados, won the College Women's 1,000-yard run in 2:34.81 at New York City's famous Madison Square Garden. She finished comfortably ahead of Duke's Shannon Rowbury, who crossed in 2:36.60. It was the first appearance for either Roadrunner at one of the top indoor track and field meets in the world.
