Hurd tabbed Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week

PLANO, Texas – LeRoy Hurd of the University of Texas at San Antonio has earned his second Southland Conference men's basketball player of the week award in three weeks. Following is a look at his week along with other nominated for the award.

LeRoy Hurd, Texas-San Antonio, Sr., F, 6-7, Moss Point, Miss., Hurd connected on a 3-point field goal with 2.9 seconds remaining to give UTSA a 68-65 victory over Sam Houston State on Saturday, capping a week which saw him average 25.0 points and 13.0 rebounds per game as UTSA scored a pair of wins. In a 78-62 win over Louisiana-Monroe, Hurd scored 28 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. He had 22 points and a season-high 15 rebounds in the win at SHSU. He now has 10 double-doubles this season in points and rebounds. For the week he shot 21-30 (70.0 percent) from the floor and 6-7 (85.7) from the free throw line. He also had three assists and two steals.

HONOR ROLL

Marcus Clark, SFA, So., G, Marshall, Texas
Clark averaged 11.5 points and 6.0 assists per game last week as the 'Jacks went 0-2 with losses to Southeastern Louisiana and UT-Arlington. Clark led SFA with 16 points and dished out seven assists in Saturday's 71-67 loss to UTA and had seven points and five assists against Southeastern Louisiana.

Willie Depron, NICH, Jr., PG
Depron averaged 21 points, 9.5 rebounds, four assists and three steals a game against the top two teams in the conference, Southestern Louisiana and Northwestern State. Against the Demons, Depron scored 23 points and grabbed eight boards. Against the Lions on the road, Depron came away with a double double by scoring 19 points and bringing down 11 boards.

Michael Gardener, SLU, Sr., G, 5-11, Detroit, Mich.
Gardner averaged 15.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.0 steals in three (2-1) games for the Lions last week. He shot 45 percent (14-for-31) from the floor and 15-for-19 (78.9 percent) from the free throw line as Southeastern earned its 16th win of the season -- the most since an 18-9 record in 1984-85. Gardner scored a career-high 26 points against Nicholls State, going 8-for-13 from the floor. He played 40 minutes in a five-point loss at Sam Houston State, scoring a team-high 16 points, grabbing five rebounds and tying a career high with four steals. He had six assists in each game for the Lions.

Gil Goodrich, LU, Jr., G, 5-10, Baltimore, Md.
Goodrich averaged 25.0 points, 4.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game in two games last week, helping Lamar post a 1-1 record. Goodrich equaled his career-high with 27 points in Lamar's 82-77 win over Texas State. He was 9-of-20 from the field, including 6-of-11 from three-point range. He scored a game-high 23 points in Lamar's 77-72 loss at McNeese State on Saturday and dished out five assists. 

Josh Naylor, TXST, Jr., G, 6-0, Rockwall, Texas
Naylor led the Bobcats with 22 points in the win over ULM while scoring 10 at Lamar earlier in the week. Naylor made 11-of-16 shots, 4-of-7 threes and 6-of-6 free throws on the week.

Derrick Obasohan, UTA, Sr., F, 6-7, Houston, Texas
Obasohan averaged 21.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game as the Mavericks defeated McNeese State on the road and then knocked off Stephen F. Austin, 71-67, Saturday afternoon. Obasohan finished the week 12-of-28 (42.8 percent) from the field, 2-of-3 (66.7) from 3-point range and 17-21 (80.9) from the foul line. He had a career-high 12 rebounds at McNeese State and his 23-point, 12-rebound game against the Cowboys was just his second career double-double.

Jerrick Oliver, MCN, Sr., F
Oliver posted his third double-double of the season in leading McNeese to a 77-72 victory over Lamar, snapping a four-game losing streak, as he scored 20 points and pulled 10 rebounds. He also had two blocked shots and three steals.

Joe Thompson, SHSU, Jr., G, 6-4, Wharton, Texas
Thompson scored 18 points in SHSU's 69-64 victory over first-place Southeastern Louisiana Thursday and 19 points in a 68-65 loss to Texas-San Antonio. For the week, he had 37 points and 12 rebounds. 

Tank Thompson, ULM, Sr., C, 6-10, Florence, S.C.
Thompson had a career night in Saturday's loss at Texas State. The center scored a career-high 23 points and also had 11 rebounds. Thompson hit 9-of-14 shots from the field and all five free throws. In Thursday's loss at UTSA, Thompson went 3-of-7 from the field for six points and also had three rebounds, one assist and one steal in 14 minutes.

Jermaine Wallace, NWLa., 6-3, G, Heflin, La. 
Wallace score 20 points, including the game-winning free throws with 36 seconds remaining, in a 78-77 win at Nicholls State Thursday night that lifted Northwestern State into a tie for first in the Southland Conference standings. Wallace sank 7-of-14 field goals, 2-of-5 on 3-pointers, 4-of-4 on free throws, had four rebounds, one block, two steals, one assist and one turnover in 38 minutes in the Demons' only action last week.
