| Feb. 14, 2004 Roadrunners defeat Kentucky, UMKC at Fastpitch Express Classic Saturday UTSA 6, Kentucky 3 SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA softball team broke out the bats Saturday at the Fastpitch Express College Classic, downing Kentucky, 6-3, and run-ruling Missouri-Kansas City, 9-1. In the 6-3 win over Kentucky, sophomore Jessica Rogers got the Roadrunners on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run homer, her first of the season, to left field that scored junior Jennifer Davis. The Wildcats answered with a run in the top of the second on a solo homer by Katie Campbell. UTSA tacked on another run in the third on a single by sophomore Jessica Els. The 'Runners pushed their lead to five with three more runs in the fifth on a two-run homer by senior Christy Brownlee, her fourth longball of the year, and a solo bomb by Els. Campbell cut the lead to three on a two-run homer, her second of the game, but UTSA would hold on for the 6-3 win. Freshman Ursula Mares pitched six innings, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out a season-high 12. She runs her record to 3-2 on the season. Sophomore Hope Ortiz pitched a perfect seventh to earn her first save of the year. In the 9-1 victory over UMKC, UTSA scored early and often and received a superb performance from freshman Stevi Simpson on the mound. Els dropped her second longball of the day, this one a three-run shot over the right-center field fence to stake the 'Runners to a 3-0 lead. Junior Krystal Gibson would add her own three-run homer an inning later, giving UTSA a comfortable 6-0 lead. The Kangaroos scratched for one run in the top of the fourth on an RBI double by Eryn Knecht. UTSA got the run back in the bottom of the inning and added two more in the bottom of the fifth, pushing the 'Runners lead to 9-1. The game was called due to the eight-runs-after-five-innings run-rule. Simpson worked all five innings, allowing just one run on three hits and striking out five. She improves to 2-0 on the season. UTSA is scheduled to play Colorado State at 11:15 a.m. Sunday. In other tournament action, Kansas won all three of its games Saturday, beating Colorado State, 4-2, North Texas, 8-1, and Bethune-Cookman, 1-0. Colorado State and Kentucky both won two games, while Texas-Arlington is 1-1 and North Texas and UMKC are both 0-3.
