Roadrunners grab fourth conference win with 83-67 victory over Nicholls State

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO - LeRoy Hurd scored 23 points and pulled down 9 rebounds to lead UTSA to its third straight victory, an 83-67 win over the Nicholls State Colonels on Saturday afternoon at the UTSA Convocation Center.

UTSA, which improved to 9-11 overall and 4-3 in Southland Conference play, placed three players in double figures as Hurd was joined by John Millsap and Anthony Fuqua with 13 points apiece.

Nicholls State fell to 5-14 and 0-8 with the loss and was led by Willie Depron with 24 points.

The two teams exchanged baskets early before UTSA took the lead for good, 23-22 on a jump shot by Rapheal Posey with 6:15 to play in the first half.

Behind 14 points by Hurd, UTSA led 34-29 at halftime.

Nicholls State closed the gap early in the second half, drawing within 41-39 on a layup by Kieran Gleeson with 15:41 to play.

UTSA answered with an 11-1 run and led 52-40 on a jump shot by Sammie Cole with 13:10 remaining.

Nicholls State would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way as UTSA rolled to its second win this season over the Colonels. UTSA had scored an 83-79 overtime win at Nicholls State on Jan. 17.

"I think we made good decisions with the basketball which led to a lot of easy shots this afternoon," said UTSA coach Tim Carter. "Our inside game really went well, with LeRoy, John and Anthony finding ways to get loose for easy baskets."

UTSA connected on 32 of 64 field goals in the game, despite shooting only 2-for-14 behind the 3-point line. The Roadrunners out-rebounded the Colonels 40-30.

The Roadrunners will return to action next Wednesday, Feb. 4 with a 7 p.m. game at Stephen F. Austin. The game can be heard on KSJL Radio (92.5 FM/810 AM) and www.goUTSA.com beginning at 6:30 p.m.
