| Jan. 21, 2004 UTSA men drop 74-73 decision to Texas State SAN ANTONIO - UTSA forward Leroy Hurd's 15-foot jump shot rimmed out with one second to play as the Roadrunners dropped a 74-73 heart-breaker to the Texas State Bobcats on Wednesday night in front of 2,487 fans at the Convocation Center. Texas-State, which improved to 9-6 and 4-0 in Southland Conference play, was led by Josh Naylor with 19 points, while Terry Conerway added 18 and Roosevelt Brown, 17. UTSA, which fell to 6-11 and 1-3, was led by Hurd, who scored all 18 of his points over the final 13:26 of the game. Rapheal Posey added 17 for the Roadrunners, while Anthony Fuqua scored 12 and Justin Harbert, 11. Leading 73-70 after two free throws by Hurd with 2:43 to play, UTSA saw Texas State score the last four points to win the game. Brown connected on two free throws to cut the lead to 73-72 with 2:28 remaining. After a UTSA turnover, Brown scored the winning basket on a breakaway layup with 1:50 to play. With a chance to take the lead, UTSA's David President missed an open 3-point field goal attempt with 10 seconds remaining. After the ball was kicked out of bounds by Texas State, Hurd drove the length of the court and missed the off-balance jump shot, and Fuqua's follow attempt was short as the Bobcats held on for the victory. "I thought we competed especially well and I was proud of the team tonight," said UTSA coach Tim Carter. "It's extremely disappointing to lose a game like this. A game like this comes down to one or two plays, and Texas State made some plays tonight when they had to and that decided the game." Texas State led 33-29 at halftime as Naylor had 11 first half points. In the tightly contested contest, neither team had more than a nine-point lead. Texas State's 30-21 lead with 4:35 to play in the first half was the largest of the game. UTSA out-shot Texas State 47.8 percent to 45.5, with the Roadrunners converting on 11 of 20 shots in the second half. UTSA will return to action this Saturday, Jan. 24 at 4 p.m. against Northwestern State at the Convocation Center. The game can be heard at tipoff on www.goUTSA.com. |
