| Dec. 18, 2003 Texas A&M downs UTSA, 62-49, Thursday night |
SAN ANTONIO - Senior LeRoy Hurd posted his fourth straight double-double and fifth of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds, but Texas A&M used a strong second-half shooting performance to outlast UTSA, 62-49, before 3,875 fans at the Alamodome Thursday night.
With the loss, the Roadrunners drop to 3-6 on the season, while the Aggies improve to 4-3.
After a slow start offensively for both teams, UTSA had a 10-5 lead nine minutes into the first half. A&M battled back to take its biggest lead of the half at 17-13, but the Roadrunners took a one-point lead at 24-23, into the locker rooms behind six points apiece from Hurd and junior Rapheal Posey.
In the second half, UTSA took a 34-31 lead with 12:50 left before A&M reeled off a 25-9 run bolstered by five 3-pointers from senior guard Kevin Turner to take a 56-43 lead with 6:15 on the clock.
The Roadrunners would get no closer as A&M closed out a strong second-half from the field and held on for the 62-49 win.
"The game could have been had by either team, but I thought the shooting of Kevin Turner was the difference," head coach Tim Carter said. "When you only shoot 32 percent, it's tough to win any game, especially against a team like Texas A&M."
The 3-pointer was a tale of two halves for the Aggies, shooting 5-of-8 from behind the arc in the second stanza after a dismal 1-of-6 effort in the first half. UTSA hit just one 3-pointer in 11 tries in the second half and finished the game shooting 32.7 percent from the field, 25 percent from downtown.
Turner's 15 points led the Aggies offensively. Senior Jesse King chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds. Junior center Anthony Fuqua posted his second consecutive solid outing, scoring 10 points and pulling down six rebounds.
UTSA returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 21, when it hosts Texas-Tyler at 3 p.m. at the Convocation Center. The game can be heard live on www.goUTSA.com.
