UTSA Men's Track and Field signs two prep standouts
SAN ANTONIO - UTSA head men's track and field coach Aaron Fox announced Monday the signing of Luke Johnson and Geronimo Acuna to national letters of intent.
Johnson has emerged as one of the top prep shot putters at Amarillo High School. He won the 2003 UIL Class 5A Region I shot put title with a personal-best 59-10 effort and grabbed gold in the shot at the USATF Youth Athletics National Championships in Buffalo, N.Y. Johnson went on to finish 15th at the 2003 World Youth Games in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada.
Acuna is a versatile athlete from Orange Grove (Texas) High School who will compete in the hurdles and high jump at UTSA. He was a UIL Class 3A state qualifier in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles last spring and owns personal bests of 14.21 in the 110m hurdles, 38.8 in the 300m hurdles and 6-10 in the high jump.
"Both Luke and Geronimo have given us an excellent foundation for recruiting," Fox said. "Luke is one of the top high school shot putters in the country that a lot of people wanted. Geronimo will help us in more than one event. Both will make an immediate impact on our program as soon as they step on campus."
