The Roadrunners pick up their first win of the season, bringing their record to 1-2, while Texas Southern falls to 0-2.
UTSA took control in the first half with an 11-0 run, holding the Tigers scoreless for 4:29, and took a 34-27 lead into the locker room thanks to freshman J.J. Risien's buzzer-beater.
The second half opened with more good basketball from the Roadrunners as they built a 15-point lead at 48-33 with 12:25 left.
However, Texas Southern trimmed the lead to seven points at 50-43 over the next three minutes. UTSA would go back up by 10 at 55-45 with 5:30 left, before the Tigers began their comeback.
Using a full-court man-to-man defense, several key turnovers helped Texas Southern tie the game at 55 with 29 seconds left. After a timeout by UTSA, Holliday took the ball at the top of the key, drove right and followed her own missed shot for the game-winner with just seven seconds remaining.
Like the last five minutes, though, Texas Southern did not give up. Monica Okolo got off a running jumper from the right side of the lane, but the ball rimmed in and out as the buzzer sounded, giving UTSA its first victory of the year.
Holliday led the Roadrunners with 22 points, while junior Lacy Mingee added 12 points and seven rebounds. UTSA shot 55 percent from the field, including 58.8 percent in the second half. Crystal Robinson led the Tigers with 16 points and 10 boards.
The Roadrunners return to action this Friday-Saturday, Nov. 28-29, when they host the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic at the Convocation Center. UTSA faces Texas-El Paso on Friday at 7 p.m., and Denver on Saturday at 6 p.m. |
