| November 20, 2003 Volleyball Contact: Erin Molina (210) 458-4930 UTSA places two on all-Southland squads; Meagan Daniel named SLC Freshman of the Year PLANO, Texas - UTSA freshmen Meagan Daniel and DeeDee Strickland both continued impressive rookie seasons as each garnered all-Southland Conference (SLC) volleyball accolades, it was announced Wednesday in a release by the conference office. Daniel, an outside hitter from Hereford, Texas, was selected to the first team and was also named the SLC Freshman of the Year. Strickland, a setter from League City, Texas was named to the third team. The two UTSA representatives are also the conference’s only freshmen named to any of the three teams.
Daniel, the lone freshman on the first squad, ranked third in the SLC with 330 kills this year, averaging 4.23 per game. She also averaged 3.05 digs per game with a total of 238 in SLC play. The Hereford native paced the Roadrunners with 494 kills, which ranks fifth on UTSA’s single-season list. Her 1,433 total attacks on the season is new single-season record and is 10th all-time at UTSA. Her defensive play compliments that of her offense as she had the third most digs on the team with 328 to go along with 17 double-doubles this year. Daniel’s 20 service aces was fourth-best on the team.
Strickland led the Roadrunner offense as the team’s setter with a league-high 956 assists to average 12.26 assist per game, which ranked second in the SLC. The Clear Creek High School product totaled 1,395 assists on the year, a third-best single-season performance at UTSA, to rank fifth all-time. She is tied for the team-high in service aces with 27 and has the second-most digs on the team with 356.
Joining the Daniel and Strickland on the all-SLC lists are senior middle blocker Teri Fry, freshman outside hitter Brittany Hildebrand and freshman libero Erin McMillan who all received honorable mention nods.
Daniel, Fry and McMillan were all SLC players of the week during the 2003 season.
UTSA (18-13, 13-7) begins play as the No. 5 seed in the 2003 SLC Volleyball Championships on Friday at 7 p.m. against No. 4 McNeese State at the Convocation Center. The winner will advance to play No. 1 seed Texas State on Saturday at 7 p.m., with the championship match being played Sunday at 4 p.m. Other teams participating include No. 2 seed Stephen F. Austin, No. 3 seed Texas-Arlington and No. 6 seed Nicholls State. UTSA is the host for this year’s tournament and all matches will be played at the Convocation Center.
