UTSA golfers in second place at Walker Collegiate
Final Results
LONG BEACH, Calif. - Behind solid play from senior Mike Mezei (Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada) and junior Michael Schaeffer (New Braunfels, Texas), the UTSA men's golf team is in second place after firing a two-round total of four-over-par 284-288=572 on the first day of the Del Walker Collegiate Classic hosted by Long Beach State at Virginia Country Club (par 71/6,633 yards).
Mezei opened with a four-under-par 68 before carding a one-over 72 in the second round to position himself in fifth place in the individual race. Schaeffer is right behind his Roadrunner teammate in sixth place at two-under 140 after posting rounds of 72, helped by his first collegiate tournament hole-in-one on No. 10, and 68. Lamar's Chris Stroud leads all individuals at 11-under (66-65=131).
In the team standings, UTSA stands just two shots back of Long Beach State, who turned in a two-over-par 289-281=570. UC Riverside is in third place at seven-over 291-284=575, followed by Southland Conference foe Lamar (576) and Arizona and Cal Poly (577).
Sophomore John Elizondo (San Antonio, Texas), who won the Crown Colony Classic his last time out, is tied for 20th at three-over 69-76=145. Freshmen Matt Johnston (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) and Tim Martin (Mandeville, La.) are tied for 43rd (76-72=148) and 63rd (76-77=153), respectively.
The final round begins on Tuesday at 8 a.m.
