Pair of doubles teams advance at ITA Regional
FORT WORTH, Texas - A pair of doubles teams advanced to the second round to highlight opening-day action for the UTSA women's tennis teams at the 2003 ITA Southwest Regional Championships at TCU's Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center Friday.
In the main doubles draw, junior Chantal Lesaar (Mettmann, Germany) and sophomore Nadezda Rossikhina (Volgograd, Russia) upset one of the No. 9 seeds, Miranda Foley and Hanan Rhazi of Houston, 8-3. They will play SMU's Paige Evans and Jenny Langer on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
Also in the main doubles, sophomores Paula Erausquin (Salta, Argentina) and Tasja Fuhrig (Flensburg, Germany) defeated Katherine Harris and Megan Schmulbach of North Texas, 8-6. They will face the No. 1-seeded team of Rocio Fantilli and Lauren Seaman from LSU on Saturday at 9 a.m.
In the main singles draw, three Roadrunners won first-round matches before falling in the second round. Lesaar dropped Texas-Arlington's Anete Rozkaine in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, and then took No. 1 seed Julie Smekodub of Tulane to three sets before falling 5-7, 6-4, 7-6.
Erausquin beat Baylor's Zuzana Kirchnakova in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6, and then lost to No. 9 seed Katie Ruckert of Texas, 6-3, 6-0. Rossikhina bettered Yasmin Fisher of Rice, 6-2, 7-6, before falling to No. 17 seed Roberta Spencer of Texas A&M, 6-3, 6-0.
Fuhrig lost her first round match to No. 9 Tracie Chong of Rice, 6-4, 6-3, and was playing Evans of SMU in the consolation bracket late Friday night.
