UTSA tennis squads back in action this weekend

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA men’s and women’s tennis teams will hit the road this weekend for a pair of tournaments. The men travel to Austin, Texas, to compete in the Texas Invitational on Friday-Sunday, Oct. 17-20, while the women march further north up I-35 to Fort Worth, Texas, for the ITA Southwest Regional Championships on Friday-Monday, Oct. 17-21. 

The Roadrunner men return to the courts after hosting the UTSA Invitational last weekend. They will face a 32-player singles field and a 16-team doubles draw from several strong teams, including Texas, Texas A&M, St. Edward's and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Singles action kicks off Friday at 10 a.m. at UT’s Penick-Allison Tennis Center. 

The singles schedule features two rounds on both Friday and Saturday, with the finals scheduled for Sunday. The doubles competition will have a slightly different schedule, as they will play one round on Friday, two on Saturday and finals on Sunday. 

At the UTSA Invitational last weekend, junior Dennis Andrade (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil) defeated Tommy Ostenson of Tyler Junior College, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the third round of the singles draw before falling to eventual champion Ivor Lovrak of Baylor, 6-1, 6-2. Sophomore Joe Olfindo (Houston, Texas) downed TJC’s Jeremy Hubbard, 6-4, 6-2, but fell to Andy Mack of Texas in the third round, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. Freshman Robert Kirchner (Hannover, Germany) beat TJC’s Brent Hunter in the first round, 6-2, 7-6, before falling to David Plasencia of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the second round, 6-4, 6-4.

The UTSA women head to TCU’s Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center for the ITA Southwest Regional on Friday-Monday. The draw for the singles is a 128-person field and the doubles consists of 64 teams. At the Rice Tennis Classic on Sept. 26-28, freshman Ana Paula Soto Anton (Mexico City, Mexico) won the back draw of the white singles bracket with a 6-3, 6-3 decision of LSU’s Bonnie White. In doubles, sophomore Paula Erausquin (Salta, Argentina) and sophomore Barbara Mooney (LaPlata, Argentina) defeated UTSA teammates sophomore Nadezda Rossikhina (Volgograd, Russia) and junior Massiel Martinez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) in the gray doubles final.
