UTSA wins Crown Colony Classic

Final Results

LUFKIN, Texas - Sophomore John Elizondo (San Antonio, Texas) won individual medalist honors in a sudden death playoff to lead the No. 44-ranked UTSA men’s golf team to the team title at the SFA-Southern Chrysler Crown Colony Classic in windy conditions at Crown Colony Country Club (6,692 yards/par 72) on Tuesday.

Entering the final round four strokes ahead of the host school Stephen F. Austin, the Roadrunners shot 300, the low round of the day, to conclude the 54-hole tournament at 2-under-par 878. UTSA finished eight shots ahead of the runner-up Lumberjacks (287-295-304=886). It was the second team victory of the fall season for the ‘Runners, who also won the Air Force Academy Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational on Sept. 19-20.

Elizondo was tied with Sam Houston State’s David Ward for the individual lead at 5-under (70-69=139) entering the final 18 today. Both shot 3-over 75 today, but Elizondo claimed top honors on the first hole of a sudden death playoff.

It was Elizondo’s first individual win and the second of the season by a Roadrunner. Senior Mike Mezei\ (Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada) tied a 30-year-old tournament record by shooting a nine-under-par 207 at the Falcon Invitational.

Mezei posted a 2-over 74 today after rounds of 70-75 on Monday and finished in a tie for sixth place at 3-over 219.

Freshman Matt Johnston (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada) turned in the low round of the day for UTSA — tied for second-lowest in the tournament — carding an even-par 72. He ended up tied for ninth at 6-over 78-72-72=222.

Junior Michael Schaeffer (New Braunfels, Texas) shot rounds of 70-76-79 to end up in a six-way tie for 12th at 9-over 225. Senior Luke Healy (Del Rio, Texas) finished in a three-way tie for 32nd at 16-over 76-77-79=232.

“This course played really tough today," head coach Chris Donielson said. “John Elizondo stepped up and won low individual in a playoff. The guys hung in there under tough conditions and brought home a victory.

“To have an individual and team title at Air Force and to do it again today really makes two great parts to our fall season. We have things to work on and we have some time off before our next tournament to do that, but this certainly helps our confidence.”

Three Roadrunners played as individuals. Sophomore Ryan Cromwell (Buda, Texas) tied for 28th at 14-over 77-77-76=230, freshman Tim Martin (Mandeville, La.) was one shot back in 31st (74-75-82=231) and freshman Kitt Thabungkan (Bangkok, Thailand) tied for 57th (82-79-85=246).
