Jerry Dyes named women's assistant coach

SAN ANTONIO — The University of Texas at San Antonio announced Monday the hiring of Jerry Dyes as women’s assistant track and field coach. A former head track and field coach at three different universities, Dyes has more than 27 years of coaching experience and has spent more than 30 years as an educator on the high school and collegiate levels.

“We are very fortunate to have someone like Jerry join our staff,” women’s head coach James Blackwood said. “He has a ton of experience and is one of the finest and most knowledgeable track coaches in the country.”

Dyes began his coaching and teaching career at Corpus Christi Ray High School, where he worked with Blackwood for two years. His 1965 cross country and track and field squads captured state titles.

Dyes jumped to the college ranks as the head track and field coach and an instructor of physical education at Northwestern State from 1970-82. There he tutored 14 all-Americans and led the Demons to a national runner-up finish at the 1976 NAIA Championships and an 11th-place finish at the 1981 NCAA Championships. His 1981 4x100-meter relay team won the NCAA title and set a then-Louisiana collegiate record time of 39.03 seconds with former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Mark Duper running anchor.

Dyes moved up the road to Louisiana Tech for a six-year stint as head coach and assistant professor of education from 1982-88. He coached eight all-Americans, including 1985 NCAA shot put champion John Campbell, and led the Bulldogs to a sweep of the American South Conference Indoor and Outdoor Championships in 1988.

From 1988-92, Dyes was at the helm of the perennial Division II power Abilene Christian men’s track and field program, leading the Wildcats to runner-up finishes at the 1992 Indoor and Outdoor National Championships.

Dyes left coaching to become principal at Brady (Texas) High School from 1992-95. He also served as assistant superintendent of operations/director of operations in Edinburg (1995-97), as assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction in Sealy (1997-2001) and as a program specialist for the Texas Education Agency in Austin for the past two years. A native of Shreveport, La., Dyes graduated from Fair Park High School in 1959. He earned a bachelor’s degree in social science in 1964 from Abilene Christian, where he was an all-American in the javelin. He earned a master’s degree in administrative education from Northwestern State (La.) in 1976. He received professional mid-management and professional superintendent certificates from Stephen F. Austin.

Dyes also competed in Masters javelin competitions for a number of years, winning the 1989 and 1991 world championships and the 1987, 1989 and 1991 national championships.

Dyes is a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Council of Educational Facility Planners, Texas Association of School Administrators, Texas Association of Secondary School Principals and Texas High School Coaches Association.

Dyes and his wife, Genevieve, have two sons, Jonathan and Jeremy.
