Letitia Gilkes leads UTSA women to 2003 Whataburger/UTSA Invitational title; Henry Maruping runs away with men's title
SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s cross country team won the team title behind the strong running of senior Letitia Gilkes (St. Michael, Barbados), while the Roadrunners’ Henry Maruping (Johannesburg, South Africa) ran away with the men’s individual championship to highlight Friday’s action at the Whataburger/UTSA Invitational held at the UTSA Cross Country Course. The UTSA women won the overall NCAA Division I team title with 18 points as Gilkes covered the 5K course in 19:40. She was backed by a strong performance from Ashley McDonald (San Antonio, Texas/East Central HS), who finished second with a time of 19:53. The Roadrunners’ top five included
Karilynn Petty (Fredericksburg, Texas/High) in sixth place with a time of 20:19, Meghan Chance (San Antonio, Texas/Reagan HS) in seventh place with a time of 20.22, and Veronica Silva in eighth with a time of 20:28. Second place went to Texas-Pan American with 47 points, while Texas State was third with 67. The College Division race was won by St. Mary’s with 26 points, followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville with 39, and Texas A&M-International with 62. Maruping was in control from start to finish in the men’s race, finishing the 5-mile course in 15:45, seven seconds faster than Martin Corona of Texas A&M-Kingsville, who finished in 15:51. The top five finishers for UTSA included Ryan Allen in sixth place with a time of 16:19; Jason Braun in 12th place with a time of 16:46; David Stonestreet in 15th place with a time of 16:54; and David Martinez in 20th place with a time of 17:22. Texas-Pan American won the Division I men’s race with 33 points, while UTSA was second with 40 points, followed by Texas State with 47. Texas A&M-Kingsville also competed.
