NEW YORK CITY — Senior Taelor Wilson's program record in the weight throw highlighted Saturday's final day of competition for the UTSA women's track & field team at the prestigious New Balance Invitational.
Wilson tossed the implement 58-1 ¾ (17.72m) en route to a 15th-place finish in the championship section and that topped teammate Katie Bragg's two-year-old mark (56-2 ½/17.13m) by nearly two feet. Not only did the Pflugerville native shatter her previous best by almost four feet (54-3 ¾/16.55m), but she also vaulted to the top of the Southland Conference standings with her career-best performance.
Meanwhile, sophomore Grace Williamson raced to a personal record in the 800 meters. The Houston native clocked a 2:14.07 on the banked 168th Street Armory track, which was good for fifth place 73-woman college division field.
The Roadrunners also received three career-best efforts from sophomores Isabel Balbontin (5:01.76/ninth) and Alyssa Diaz (5:06.72/15th) and junior Jessica Bitterly (5:09.96/25th) in the mile.
In the field, junior Eboni Johnson skipped to a season-best 38-9 ¾ (11.83m) en route to a sixth-place finish in the college flight of the triple jump.
Midway through Saturday's festivities, UTSA and head coach Aaron Fox were presented with the 2012 Louise Tricard Sportsmanship Award, which is given annually to a school that has shown outstanding enthusiasm for the competition in previous years.
The Roadrunners are off for the next two weeks before opening competition at the Southland Indoor Championships on Friday, Feb. 24, in Norman, Okla.
