SAN ANTONIO — First-year UTSA head softball coach Amanda Lehotak announced Monday her program's 2012 schedule, which is highlighted by 15 home games, nine contests against postseason teams from a year ago and five tournaments.
“We’re very excited to face the challenges that this schedule presents us,” said Lehotak, who will coach her first game for the Roadrunners on Feb. 10 at Texas. “This schedule has good balance and I know that after facing stiff competition at our early-season tournaments, we will have a better idea of our strengths and weaknesses and be prepared for Southland Conference play.”
UTSA, which was 28-27 overall last season, will open the 53-game slate on Feb. 10 at the three-day Texas Classic in Austin where it will face the Longhorns, Colorado State and Cal State Fullerton.
The Roadrunners then will begin their home slate on Feb. 14 when Texas Southern comes to town for a doubleheader.
That date will be followed by three consecutive tournaments away from the Alamo City.
The Birds will travel to College Station for the Aggie Classic (Feb. 17-19), where they will square off with Tulsa, North Carolina State and Texas A&M before games against North Dakota, Mississippi and Texas Southern at the Islander Classic (Feb. 24-26) in Corpus Christi. UTSA then heads to El Paso for contests against Brown, Iowa State, Valparaiso and the host Miners at the UTEP Invitational (March 2-4).
Southland play is slated to begin with a March 7 doubleheader at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Roadrunners then will host Central Arkansas (March 9-10) in their home conference opener before returning to the road.
A pair of NCAA Tournament teams from last season await UTSA on March 13, when it faces North Dakota State and Women’s College World Series participant Baylor in Waco.
The Roadrunners’ remaining non-conference ledger consists of matchups with Texas Southern (March 20), Houston Baptist (April 4/17) and Houston (May 1).
The Spring Hill Suites Invitational in Boise, Idaho, represents UTSA's final regular-season tournament. The Birds will face a field that includes New Mexico, Weber State, Boise State and Seattle, a future Western Athletic Conference opponent, from March 23-25.
UTSA’s remaining home conference games include Northwestern State (March 30-31), Sam Houston State (April 6-7), UT Arlington (April 20-21) and Nicholls (April 27-28).
Meanwhile, the squad will face McNeese State (March 16-17), Southeastern Louisiana (April 13-14), Texas State (April 24) and Stephen F. Austin (May 4-5) in league road series.
The conference’s top six teams will qualify for the Southland Tournament, which UTSA will host for the first time from May 10-12 at Roadrunner Field.
