BLANCO — Senior Shannon Jungman fired six birdies for an opening round 70 and she helped defending champion UTSA grab an 11-shot lead on Monday at the Southland Conference Championship, which is being played at Vaaler Creek Golf Club (par 72/5,994 yards).

The Roadrunners carded a two-over-par 290 on the day and Jungmann is tied with Central Arkansas’ Malin Senneryd atop the inidividual leaderboard.

The Pflugerville native started the day with a birdie on No. 1 and later added birds on Nos. 4, 7, 12, 14 and 15.

Sophomore Fabiola Arriaga rallied from bogeys on her first two holes and carded birdies on Nos. 3, 14 and 16 to finish the day in third place with a one-under 71.

Meanwhile, classmate Taylor Newlin, whose bogeys on Nos. 11 and 17 were offset by birds on Nos. 4 and 16, stands fourth following a 72.

Junior Paola Valerio carded a 77 to tie for 12th place and senior Summer Batiste shot an 81 to tie for 23rd place to round out UTSA's scorers.

Texas State, who entered the tournament as the conference’s top-rated squad, shot an opening-round 301, while Lamar (305), Central Arkansas (312), Sam Houston State (312), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (316), McNeese State (335) and Stephen F. Austin (338) round out the team standings.
