UTSA routs Central Arkansas for 12th consecutive sweep

CONWAY, Ark. — UTSA hit .439 and earned its 12th consecutive sweep with a 25-19, 25-12, 25-17 victory at Central Arkansas on Saturday.

The Roadrunners (18-8, 12-0 SLC) posted the second-highest hitting percentage in the program's 29-year history after connecting on 50 kills with only seven errors in their 98 attacks.

Sophomore McKenzie Adams led the way with 11 winners, while senior Elise Huskey posted 10. Redshirt junior Kelsey Schwirtlich handed out 39 assists and guided UTSA to its best offensive output of the year.

Defensively, the Roadrunners posted nine total team blocks and limited the Sugar Bears (14-12, 8-4 SLC) to a .162 hitting percentage.

Junior Megan Wimbish collected a season-high 16 digs while senior Kelsey Jewasko chipped in with 13.

UTSA blistered the Sugar Bears defense at a .484 clip in the opening frame.

The Roadrunners took a quick 3-1 lead, but UCA answered for a 5-4 edge. UTSA responded with a 4-0 spurt that was capped by a winner from freshman Dempsey Thornton. After pushing the advantage to 12-9, the Birds kept their three-point lead when junior Brittney Malloy answered the next three Central Arkansas points with kills. UTSA led the rest of the way with Malloy racking up two more winners in the process.

UTSA continued its offensive dominance in the second frame with a .500 hitting percentage, which was aided by 18 kills. Huskey had the hottest hand in the frame with five winners.

The two teams split the first eight points before the Birds triggered a 6-0 run with five kills and a block to take a 10-4 advantage. The Roadrunners cruised the rest of the way, as Schwirtlich picked up a pair of service aces and junior Whitney Walls added four winners.

Thornton connected on a kill to give UTSA a 3-2 lead in the third panel, a lead it never relinquished. The Roadrunners pushed its lead to as much as 10 in the stanza and rolled to the victory.

UTSA will continue its road on Thursday, Nov. 3, at Sam Houston State (13-11, 7-4 SLC).
