SAN DIEGO, Calif. — UTSA opened its outdoor campign with four victories and six other top-three finishes at this weekend's weather-shortened Aztec Invitational.
Leading the way was junior Ronson Small, who claimed gold medals in both the 200 meters and long jump on Friday. The Bridgetown, Barbados, native clocked a 21.58 to win the 44-man deuce field and then broke the sand in 22-6 ¼ (6.86m) for his second victory of the meet.
The Roadrunners' other two triumphs also came on Friday in the hurdles.
Junior Darryl Wyrick crossed the line in 53.37 to win the 400m hurdles, while sophomore Keyunta Hayes clocked a 14.48 en route to gold in the 110m hurdles.
Juniors Richard Garrett Jr. (170-2/51.87m in discus), Roscoe Robinson (45-1 12/13.75m in triple jump) and Tyler Williamson (10.95 in 100m), sophomore Joshua Smith (53.92 in 400m hurdles) and the 1,600m relay (3:21.23) all finished second in their respective events, while junior James Pailin (49.06 in 400m) rounded out the top-three performances.
The meet was cancelled midway through Saturday's action due to inclement weather.
The Roadrunners will be back in action next weekend at the Victor Lopez Classic. The two-day meet begins on Friday, March 23, in Houston.
