UTSA places 12th at season-opening UCF Challenge

SORRENTO, Fla. — UTSA shot a 311 during Tuesday's final round of the UCF Challenge and the Roadrunnes finished their season-opening tournament in 12th place with a three-day total of 910 (299-300-311).

Senior Summer Batiste led the way with a 225 (75-72-78) to tie for 43rd. The Spring native holed a pair of birdies in the final round and finished the event with seven overall.

Meanwhile, sophomore Fabiola Arriaga closed the tournament in a tie for 58th place at 229 (74-74-81).

Senior Shannon Jungman and sophomore Taylor Newlin finished just two strokes behind at 231. Jungman fired a 79 on the final day to go along with rounds of 75 and 77, while Newlin’s team-leading final round score of 76 came after a 75 and 80 in the opening two rounds.

Junior Paola Valerio rounded out UTSA's scoring with a 233 (78-77-78).

No. 3 Auburn took the team title with an 863 (285-284-294) and the Tigers’ Victoria Trapani claimed the individual crown at 213 (68-72-73).

The Roadrunners will hit the links again in two weeks at the Islanders Classic in Corpus Christi. The two-day tournament gets underway on Feb. 27.
