AUSTIN —  Sophomore Fabiola Arriaga carded a 141 (69-72) to pace UTSA during Monday's opening day of The Challenge at Onion Creek. The Roadrunners finished the day in second place with a 582 (292-290) after 36 holes, which is just three shots back of leader and 32nd-ranked Texas Tech.

After winning last week’s Alamo Invitational, Arriaga continued her hot streak with a one-under-par 69 in the first round, as her scorecard featured four birdies. The Torreon, Mexico, native came back in the afternoon to card a pair of birds en route to an two-over 72 and she sits in third place on the individual leaderboard, two strokes behind Texas Tech’s Gabriella Dominguez (70-69=139) and Michigan’s Linda Luo (69-70=139).

Fellow sophomore Taylor Newlin fired a total of six birdies on the day, including four during the second round, en route to a 146 (73-73) and she is tied for 10th place. Newlin particularly enjoyed success on the back nine, where she notched birdies on Nos. 10, 11, 14 and 16.

Sophomore Paola Valerio recorded dual rounds of 74 for a 148, which has her tied for 16th heading into Tuesday's final round.

Rounding out the Roadrunners lineup were seniors Shannon Jungman (27th/151=76-75) and Summer Batiste (34th/152=81-71). Batiste rebounded to shoot a one-over-par 71 in the second round on the strength of a pair of birdies after opening the day with an 81.

Michigan is three strokes behind UTSA for third place with a 585 (295-290), while host Texas State (291-297-588) and Augusta State (297-293-590) follow in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Tuesday's final round begins at 8:30 a.m.
