AUSTIN — Junior Alyssa Vordenbaum pitched six scoreless innings in relief and UTSA scored four runs in the sixth to rally past Cal State Fullerton, 5-3, in Sunday's consolation game of the Texas Classic.

Pitching in an unseasonably cold morning, Vordenbaum (1-1) surrendered just five hits, walked three and struck out a pair.

The Roadrunners (1-4) benefitted from a trio of Titans errors and freshman Courtney Buchman went 3-for-4 with a double and run scored.

Cal State Fullerton (2-3) opened the contest with three runs on just two hits off UTSA starter Morgan Luksa. A one-out walk, single and wild pitch put runners on second and third before another errant toss allowed a run to score. Morgan LeMond then worked the count full before putting the Titans ahead 3-0 with a two-run homer.

The Roadrunners got one of those runs back in the top of the second. Junior Haylee Staton led off the frame with a double and came around to score on a Buchman single that was followed by an error.

The score remained 3-1 until UTSA took the lead for good with a four-run sixth inning.

The panel started with singles by Staton, senior Nikki Goff and Buchman, which loaded the bases. An error on senior Ashley Kappler’s grounder to third allowed Staton and Goff to cross the plate, which tied the score at three.

UTSA took its first advantage of the contest on Desiree Ybarra’s wild pitch and freshman Megan Low’s sacrifice fly to left plated Kappler for the 5-3 lead.

The Titans had a chance in the bottom of the seventh after a leadoff single and two-out double put the tying run in scoring position, but Vordenbaum got Emily Vizcarra to ground out for the Roadrunners’ first victory of the spring.

Ybarra (1-1) went the distance for Cal State Fullerton, allowing just one earned run on 11 hits, whie striking out four.

Staton and senior Caitlyn Ivy each went 2-for-4 to lead UTSA at the plate.

The Roadrunners open their home slate on Tuesday, Feb. 14, with a doubleheader against Texas Southern (2-0). First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
