SAN ANTONIO — Led by 17th-place finishes from junior Stanton Tondre and sophomore Ryan Werre, UTSA finished ninth at the third annual Lone Star Invitational, which wrapped up on a windy Tuesday at Briggs Ranch Golf Club (par 72/7,253 yards). The tournament wrapped up the program's fall campaign.
Werre led all Roadrunners in the final round with a one-over-par 73, as he recorded the fifth-best round of the day in the 84-man field. The Redcliff, Alberta, native posted four birdies in tough conditions that saw a wind constantly blowing out of the north at 25-30 miles-per-hour. Werre’s 54-hole total of 219 (74-72-73) bettered his previous fall-best of 225 and the 17th-place showing is his top finish since placing third at April's Southland Conference Championship.
Tondre, who hails from nearby Castroville, fired a final-round 76. Teeing off on No. 10, he overcame a tough 41 on the back nine with a one-under 35 on the front to match Werre as the top Roadrunner. His three-round tally of 219 (72-71-76) easily surpassed his previous season best of 231 and the 17th-place finish was 13 spots better than the 30th he debuted with at the UTA/Waterchase Invitational.
UTSA jumped into the top 10 with a final round 304, the seventh-best round on the day. The Roadrunners placed ninth overall with a 23-over 887 (292-291-304), which was six shots ahead of Sam Houston State (893) and seven strokes better than Rice (894). UTSA nearly caught Houston (884) and UT Arlington (883) for a top-seven effort.
Junior Nicko Dodd turned in a six-over 78 on Tuesday and finished with a 226 (73-75-78) to tie for 44th, while fellow third-year performer Mitchell Griffin tied for 50th at 227 after firing a five-over 77. Redshirt freshman Martin Board closed out a tie for 61st at 230 with an 83.
No. 16 New Mexico won the team title with a three-under 861 (274-286-301), while Texas A&M (869=288-276-305) and North Texas (869=286-281-302) tied for second.
Rice’s Jeff Wibawa rallied to capture the individual crown at seven-under 209 with a final-round 72 to edge Baylor’s Joakim Mikkelsen by one shot.
Three Roadrunners competed as individuals in the 54-hole event. Freshman Reed Stegall tied for 64th with a 231 (81-77-79), sophomore Eddie DeVane tied for 75th with a 236 (76-77-83) and junior Taylor Koser tied for 79th with a 240 (78-84-78).
The Roadrunners will open the spring season in four months when they host the annual UTSA Oak Hills Invitational. The two-day tournament gets underway on Feb. 13.
