BOISE, Idaho — UTSA pounded out 10 hits, including three home runs, en route to an 8-3 victory against Seattle before allowing a pair of late scores in a 2-1 loss to Weber State on Saturday at the SpringHill Suites Invitational.
Seniors Caitlyn Ivy and Nikki Goff each went 4-for-7 at the plate for the Roadrunners (11-17), while classmate Morgan Luksa figured in both decisions to move to 2-5 on the season.
UTSA jumped on top in the second frame against the Redhawks (7-16) by manufacturing a run on a double-steal.
Ivy led off the inning with a single before a walk and a fielder’s choice put the Huntington native on third. Senior Laura Little broke from first base, which drew a throw from catcher Bubba Morrow, and Ivy made her move for home as soon as the throw went to second and scored for the early 1-0 lead.
Goff extended the advantage to 3-0 two innings later with her second homer of the season. The blast to left center plated Ivy, who again reached with a single.
The Roadrunners went to the long ball once more in the fifth when sophomore Molly Fichtner’s two-run shot to left made it 5-0. Freshman Megan Low followed with a solo shot for her team-leading fifth round-tripper of the campaign.
However, Seattle ended the shutout and cut the deficit in half with a three-run sixth.
UTSA responded with a pair of two-out insurance runs in the seventh.
Pinch runner Geena Garcia scored on Ivy’s run-scoring single to right and the senior came all the way around to score on Goff’s double to right center.
Luksa finished off the Redhawks in the seventh for her second win of the season. The League City native struck out five in 2.2 innings and gave up just one hit, while Richelle Ashburn (2-7) allowed six runs in five innings of work.
The Roadrunners appeared to carry that momentum into their second game of the day when senior Ashley Kappler led off the game with a solo homer to left center, her second of the season.
However, that was all UTSA managed the rest of the way against the Wildcats (10-15), who got a complete-game effort from Sarah Clark (8-5) in the circle.
The Wildcats tied the score after a wild pitch and throwing error in the fifth before taking the lead on an RBI double from Clark an inning later.
UTSA had one final chance, as it put left the tying run on third in the seventh.
Luksa allowed two runs (one earned) in 1.1 innings.
The Roadrunners will conclude tournament play on Sunday with an 11 a.m. (CT) contest against New Mexico.
