UTSA claims Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate crown on Sunday

AUGUSTA, Ga. — UTSA carded an 880 (298-286-296) towin the three-day Insperity Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate by six strokes overhost Augusta State on Sunday at Forest Hills Golf Club (par 72/6,248 yards).

The Roadrunners won back-to-back tournaments for the first time in program history and now have been victorious a record three times this season.

UTSAplaced three players in the top 10 and all five finished in the top 25 en routeto the sixth tournament title in program annals.

"To lead wire-to-wire against this field with AugustaState and Purdue is very impressive," assistant coach Ian Parnaby said. "Thatsecond round was one of the best we've played as a team. Coming off our victoryin Corpus Christi and a third-place finish here last year, we felt good aboutour chances this weekend and we're very happy with the result."

The Roadrunners entered the day with a four-stroke leadand the team finished strong with a combined six birdies in its final fiveholes, including a pair on Nos. 17 and 18 from senior Summer Batiste.

"This group really knows how to finish off rounds andtournaments," Parnaby said. "It's a credit to them being mentally strong andcompetitive. The team's level of play right now comes as no surprise with all oftheir hard work, commitment and preparation."

Senior Shannon Jungman and sophomore Fabiola Arriaga ledthe way for UTSA with a 218, which was good for a third-place tie.

The finishis the highest of Jungman's career and her third top-five finish of the season.She recorded a  74 on the final day to goalong with rounds of 73 and 71 and added two birdies to finish with eight inthe tournament.

Meanwhile, Arriaga fired a 73 by shooting even-par on 15 holeswith a pair of bogeys and a birdie that followed rounds of 75 and 70 en routeto posting her fourth top-five mark on the season.

Not far behind was Batiste, who shot even-par 72 for thesecond consecutive day for a 54-hole score of 219 (75-72-72) to tie for fifthplace. The Spring native logged a team-high five birdies in the third round and12 during the three-day tournament.

The trio in the top five was followed by sophomore TaylorNewlin, whose 226 (75-73-78) was good for 18th place, and junior Paola Valerio,who fired a 228 (78-73-77) to tie for 22nd. Both recorded birdies on No. 1 tohelp close out their round.

Augusta Statetook second place for the second consecutive year with an 886 (299-289-298) andNo. 31 Purdue finished one stroke behind the Lady Jaguars with an 887 (299-293-295).The Boilermakers were led by individual medalist Paula Reto, who fired a tournament-record64 on Sunday for a 207 (75-68-64) to win individual medalist honors by 10 strokes.

UTSA will return to the links next week at the AnuenueSpring Break Classic in Kapalua, Hawai'i. The two-day tournament tees off on Monday, March 26.
