AUSTIN — UTSA concluded its fall season on Tuesday after shooting an 878 (292-290-296) to tie for second, while sophomore Fabiola Arriaga carded a 213 (69-72-72) to finish in the same spot on the individual leaderboard at The Challenge at Onion Creek.

The Roadrunners tied with Michigan (295-290-293=878) and the pair finished four shots behind Texas Tech (288-291-295=874), which led the event from start to finish.

The field batted strong winds and, at times, light rain during the final 18 holes.

Arriaga started the day with a birdie on No. 1 and another on No. 7 put her at even-par for the front nine. She then logged a pair of bogeys on the back nine to finish one stroke behind Texas Tech’s Gabriella Dominguez.

Sophomore Taylor Newlin recorded her third career top-10 finish with a 221 (73-73-75). The Frisco native fired eight birdies for the tournament to tie for 10th.

Senior Shannon Jungman, who saved her best round for last with a 72, was two strokes back. Her lone birdie of the day came on No. 6 to help the Pflugerville native tie for 19th with a 223 (76-75-72).

Senior Summer Batiste carded a 229 (81-71-77) to tie for 39th, while junior Paola Valerio shot a 230 (74-74-82) to tie for 42nd.

The Roadrunners topped fellow Southland Conference members Texas State (sixth/886=291-297-298) and McNeese State (13th/970=323-313-334) along with No. 47 East Carolina (seventh/894=306-296-292).

UTSA will open its spring season in three months at the UCF Challenge in Sorrento, Fla. The three-day tournament is scheduled to get underway on Feb. 12.
