SAN ANTONIO — Head softball coach Amanda Lehotak announced Friday that Victoria Birdwell (Magnolia, Texas/Magnolia HS), Ashlee Garcia (Jarrell, Texas/Jarrell HS) and Cosette Hernandez (San Antonio, Texas/Johnson HS) have signed National Letters of Intent to join the program for the 2013 season.
“I’m very excited to have these three versatile players join our squad next season,” Lehotak said. “Victoria, Ashlee and Cosette are great athletes that can play multiple positions and they will greatly improve our depth. They bring a little more speed to the lineup, which will make us more aggressive on the basepaths and put more pressure on the defense.”
Birdwell will enter her senior season this spring at Magnolia High School, where she has been a standout since earning honorable mention all-district accolades her freshman year. As an outfielder, she has been named Class 4A All-State, first-team All-Montgomery County, all-district and earned the Magnolia Gold Glove Award in each of the last two seasons. As a sophomore, Birdwell led the team in batting average, runs and stolen bases and was named to the state all-tournament team while helping the Lady Bulldogs to a Class 4A runner-up finish. In addition, she has been named academic all-district three times and was recognized as a Wendy’s High School Heisman in 2011.
Garcia is a four-year varsity player at Jarrell High School and spent last summer with the Austin Funk, where she hit .575 with 11 extra-base hits and six stolen bases. With time in the infield and outfield, Garcia was named the district’s Utility Player of the Year as a freshman. Additionally, she has been named the District 27-2A Defensive MVP the last two seasons and academic all-district all three years. Garcia also is a two-time first-team all-district selection as a member of the Cougars volleyball and basketball teams and earned all-state, all-region and district MVP honors for the hoops squad last season.
Hernandez is a four-year varsity player for former Roadrunner Jennifer Fox (Drake) at Johnson High School, where she is a three-time first-team All-District 26-5A selection. As a junior in 2011, she helped lead the Jaguars to the district, bi-district and area championships while hitting .505 with 50 runs, 12 extra-base hits and a .570 on-base percentage. For her efforts, Hernandez also landed a spot on the San Antonio Express-News All-Area team. In addition, she is a member of the National Honor Society and earned the House of Distinguished Jaguar academic award.
