BLANCO — Senior Shannon Jungman shot a one-over-par 217 (70-73-74) to win individual medalist honors and she led UTSA to its second consecutive Southland Conference Championship on Wednesday at Vaaler Creek Golf Club (par 72/5,994 yards).
The Roadrunners led the event from start to finish for their fourth tournament victory of the season, while the squad earned their second NCAA Regional berth. UTSA carded an 896 (290-306-300) and topped I-35 rival and 45th-ranked Texas State, which finished with a three-day total of 901 (301-297-303).
"This is another huge step forward for our program," head coach Carrie Parnaby said. "Back-to-back conference championships and our fourth tournament win add to the history our team has made this season. I'm very proud of Shannon and the rest of her teammates. For her to capture the first win of her collegiate career made the day even more special. This group works very hard and they are a joy to coach every day."
Jungman, who also led the event from day one, edged out sophomore Fabiola Arriaga by three shots to win the first event of her collegiate career and become the second individual conference champion in program history (Allie Jordan, 2009). The Pflugerville native fired a two-under 34 on the front nine before a four-over 40 on the back side. She finished the tournament with 13 birdies after adding four to her three-round total over the final 18 holes.
Arriaga carded a 220 (71-76-73) to notch her seventh top-10 finish of the campaign. The Torreon, Mexico, native erased two early bogeys with a pair of birdies on the back nine before a bogey on No. 18 for her one-over 73.
Classmate Taylor Newlin rebounded from Tuesday's outing and knocked in three birdies en route to a final-round 75 to finish tied for ninth at 229 (72-82-75).
Meanwhile, senior Summer Batiste tied for 16th with a 237 (81-81-78) and junior Paola Valerio was two spots back at 238 (77-79-82).
Lamar (928) finished in third place, while Central Arkansas (932), Sam Houston State (932), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (949), Stephen F. Austin (991) and McNeese State (1,001) rounded out the team standings.
UTSA will learn its NCAA Regional destination at 8 p.m. (CT) on Monday, April 30, when the selection show is aired on NCAA.com. This year’s regional sites include State College, Pa. (Penn State Golf Course), Columbus, Ohio (The Ohio State University Golf Club) and Erie, Colo. (Colorado Nationals Golf Club) and they will be played from May 10-12.
