Colorado State drops UTSA in season opener, 10-2
AUSTIN — Colorado State pounded out 12 hits en route to a 10-2 run-rule victory against UTSA in the season opener for both squads on Friday at the second game of the Texas Classic.
The Rams' top three hitters did much of the damage, going a combined 6-for-11 with three RBIs and six runs scored.
Colorado State opened the game by scoring three runs with two outs. A pair of wild pitches, an error and four hits aided the inning and quickly put UTSA in a 3-0 hole.
The Roadrunners responded with two runs in the bottom half of the frame off starter Kelli Eubanks. Senior Ashley Kappler led off the inning with a double to right that was followed by sophomore Molly Fichtner’s single, which put runners on first and third with no outs.
A groundout moved Fichtner to second before a passed ball allowed Kappler to score the season’s first run. Senior Caitlyn Ivy worked the count full before delivering an RBI single that cut the deficit to 3-2.
However, Colorado State answered with three runs in the second and four more in the third to put the game out of reach.
UTSA starter Morgan Luksa took the loss after surrendering seven hits and five earned runs in 1.1 innings.
Meanwhile, Eubanks allowed just one earned run on four hits with a pair of strikeouts in the complete-game victory.
The Roadrunners will look to bounce back against No. 18 Texas (1-0) at 5 p.m. The game can be seen on Longhorn Network with Dave Raymond and Amanda Scarborough calling the action from McCombs Field.
No. 18 Texas blanks UTSA on Friday night
AUSTIN — Colorado Lexy Bennett went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and four RBIs to lead No. 18 Texas to a 15-0, run-rule victory against UTSA on Friday night at McCombs Field.
The Longhorns (2-0) scored all 15 of their runs with two outs and were backed by Rachel Fox, who allowed three hits while striking out six in five innings for the victory.
After a pair of fly outs in the bottom of the first, Texas strung together seven consecutive hits for four runs.
The same was true in the second, when an eight-run outburst followed two outs to start the inning. Bennett’s solo homer started the rally, while Taylor Hoagland’s three-run blast to left capped the spurt.
The Longhorns tacked on three more runs in the fourth for the final margin.
The Roadrunners (0-2) got hits from senior Alaina Byars, sophomore Molly Fichtner and freshman Megan Low. UTSA had its best scoring chance in the top of the first when Low’s single to right-center and a pair of walks loaded the bases. However, sophomore Molly Fichtner was forced out at home and Fox then recorded her first strikeout to end the inning.
Junior Alyssa Vordenbaum took the loss after giving up five earned runs in 1.2 innings.
UTSA will continue play at 10 a.m. on Saturday against Cal State Fullerton (1-1).
