Newlin leads UTSA to top of Islanders Classic leaderboard on Monday

CORPUS CHRISTI — UTSA sits atop the team leaderboard and all five of its players rank in the top six, including sophomore Taylor Newlin, who leads the field with a 145 (72-73), after 36 holes at the Islanders Classic.

In their first action at the Corpus Christi Country Club (par 72/6,993 yards) since winning last year's Southland Conference Championship, the Roadrunners fired consecutive rounds of 296 on Monday and they will take commanding 27-shot lead over tournament host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi into the final 18 holes. UTSA was the only team in the field to shoot less than 300 in either of the first two round.

Newlin’s 145 is tied with North Dakota State’s Amy Anderson for the top spot on the individual ledger. The Frisco native started her day with an even-par-72 before a shooting a one-over 73 in the second 18 holes.

The pair leads senior Summer Batiste, who sits is in third place at 149, by four strokes. Batiste opened with a 75 before closing the day with a 2-over-par 74.

Sophomore Fabiola Arriaga is one shot behind Batiste following her opening-day 150 (76-74) and that is good for fourth.

Senior Shannon Jungman and junior Paola Valerio both recorded 151s to round out the team's scoring. Jungman fired rounds of 76 and 75, while Valerio carded scores of 73 and 78 on the day.

The event will conclude at on Tuesday with the final round.
