SAN ANTONIO — Senior Caitlyn Ivy went 4-for-7, including a grand slam, with six RBIs and three runs scored to help UTSA sweep a Tuesday doubleheader from Texas Southern by scores of 11-3 and 12-7.
Sophomore Molly Fichtner (four RBIs) and freshman Megan Low (three RBIs) also homered and collected multiple RBIs for the Roadrunners, who improved to 3-4 with the victories. Meanwhile, the pair of defeats evened the Lady Tigers’ record at 2-2.
Low wasted no time in the opener and put UTSA on the board with a two-run shot to center that scored senior Ashley Kappler. After a walk, single and wild pitch, junior Haylee Staton’s sacrifice fly to left gave the Roadrunners a three-run cushion.
Texas Southern got a tally back in the top of the second and tied the game with a pair of runs in the fourth before the Roadrunners scored eight consecutive for the 11-3 margin in five innings.
In the bottom of the fourth, Fichtner plated a run with a single and another followed after an error on the play. An inning later, another fielding error allowed two runs to score for a 7-3 lead. UTSA polished off the run-rule triumph with four runs thanks to Fichtner’s homer and three consecutive hits.
Junior Alyssa Vordenbaum (2-1) earned the victory after striking out nine and giving up three runs on six hits.
Rebecca Villarreal (1-1) was charged with the loss.
The Lady Tigers took a 2-0 lead to start the nightcap thanks to an error before run-scoring singles by Low and senior Alaina Byars knotted the score.
Texas Southern regained the lead with a run in the second and held a 5-2 advantage after its half of the third frame.
However, UTSA scored four runs aided by pair of Lady Tigers errors in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good. After the two miscues started the panel, Low singled to load the bases for Ivy, who delivered a grand slam to center for a 6-5 cushion. Texas Southern went on to commit two more errors in the inning, but it kept the Roadrunners off the scoreboard.
UTSA took control of the contest with six runs in the fourth highlighted by a two-run single from Fichtner, a two-RBI double by Low and an run-scoring double from senior Laura Little. When the dust settled, the Roadrunners led 12-5.
The Lady Tigers tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth with a homer and walk with the bases loaded, but they got no closer the rest of the night.
Morgan Luksa (1-2) took the win after going 1.1 innings out of the bullpen, while Staton notched her first save of the season after allowing a hit in four panels.
UTSA returns to action this weekend at the Aggie Classic in College Station. The Roadrunners will face No. 15 Texas A&M (3-2), North Carolina State (3-1) and Tulsa (2-1) at the three-day tournment that starts Friday.
