LUBBOCK — Junior Richard Garrett Jr. successfully defended his shot put title and fellow junior Taylor Reed broke his program record in the pole vault to lead UTSA during Saturday's final day of competition at the Texas Tech Invitational.

Garrett Jr. put the implement 58-4 ½ (17.79m) to defeat Abilene Christian's Nick Jones by 10 inches. He added 10-and-one-quarter inches to his Southland Conference-leading mark while topping a parade of four Roadrunners that placed in the top six. The Garland native, who now ranks 22nd nationally, has won the event six times during his three-year career.

Meanwhile, Reed cleared 16-6 ¾ (5.05m) en route to a third-place finish in the A section of his speciality event. That added two inches to the standard he shared with former Roadrunner Kyle Kaase and it came three hours after he won the B flight (15-7/4.75m).

UTSA's other top performance of the day came from junior Nate Brunette, who raced to the third-fastest 400-meters time in school history (48.29/fifth), which now stands second on the league leaderboard. That came on the heels of his school-record-breaking 200m effort (21.49) on Friday night.

The six-time defending Southland Champion Roadrunners return to action next weekend at the Houston Invitational/Multis. The two-day meet begins on Friday, Jan. 27, at Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse.
