NAMPA, Idaho — Junior high jumper Keith Benford became the seventh indoor All-American in UTSA men's track & field history with his 14th-place finish on Saturday at the NCAA Championships.
After clearing the initial height of 6-10 ¾ (2.10m) on his first attempt, Benford was able to clear 7-0 ½ (2.15m) on his third try, but the three-time Southland Conference Champion was unable to advance following three misses at 7-2 ½ (2.20m). Arizona's Nick Ross won the national title with his jump of 7-3 ¾ (2.23m).
It marks the second All-America honor of the Pflugerville native's illustrious three-year career, as he earned honorable mention accolades at last year's national outdoor meet. His honor marks seventh time in the last nine years that a UTSA student-athlete has earned a certificate at the indoor national meet, all of which have come under the tutelage of 10th-year head coach Aaron Fox.
UTSA opens its outdoor season on Thursday, March 15, at the three-day Aztec Invitational in San Diego, Calif.
